The SJS will explore a variety of genres associated with the city, from its popular waltzes and operetta overtures to Gustav Mahler's exquisitely beautiful Adagietto to Arnold Schoenberg's intriguing Cabaret Songs. 03-22-2025 Mozart's "Requiem" with St Joseph Community Chorus and Benedictine Chamber Choir
The Saint Joseph Symphony in collaboration with the Saint Joseph Community Chorus, choristers from Benedictine College and guest soloists under the direction of Timothy Tharaldson, bring to the Missouri Theater one of Mozart's most enduring, moving, and important works for chorus and orchestra, Requiem. Literally written by the composer on his deathbed, the creation of this work has been shrouded in legend and folklore. Who was the mysterious stranger in the gray cloak who commissioned it and why? Mozart came to believe he was writing it for himself, but unfortunately died before that was accomplished, thus leaving his musical colleagues to complete the work based on his sketches. To experience this dynamic and inspirational work LIVE should be on every music lover's "bucket list"!
04-19-2025 Bach to Mendelssohn
We tend to mistakenly think that during his lifetime J.S. Bach was considered a rock star. But it wasn't until a young Felix Mendelssohn conducted the works of Johann Sebastian Bach that he attained the world-wide fame that has lasted to this day. In our season finale, Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor, features our own concertmaster, Chun-Chien Chaung and 1st violinist Andrew Holmes. One of the works that survives in Bach's own handwriting, it will charm you with its virtuosic musical textures, playful interaction between the instruments, and graceful melodies. The concert concludes with an atmospheric ode to Mendelssohn's travels in Scotland. - his third symphony dubbed "The Scottish". Join us as we close another wonderful season of magical music on (and at) the Missouri!
