09-28-2024 Viennese Soiree featuring Lynn Spurgat

We will open the season with an evening of music from the European Capital of Music, Vienna, Austria! The SJS will explore a variety of genres associated with the city, from its popular waltzes and operetta overtures to Gustav Mahler's exquisitely beautiful Adagietto to Arnold Schoenberg's intriguing Cabaret Songs. Schoenberg's songs evoke the atmosphere of the theatres of the early 20th century and will be performed by prominent artist and Saint Joseph native, Lynn Spurgat. (Ms. Spurgat is a Central High grad and earned her Bachelor’s at William Jewell College. Her late father, Dr. Robert Spurgat, and her mother, Susan are faithful supporters of the SJS.) It's a little taste of something for everyone! You won't want to miss a single note!

12-21-2024 “Holiday Cheer 2024” with Guest Singers, The St Joseph Youth Chorale

Capture that holiday spirit with the SJS in our popular Holiday Cheer concert in the historic Missouri Theater. This pops-style concert features favorites such as Sleigh Ride, The Little Drummer Boy (a Saint Joseph staple), and of course a Christmas Carol sing-a-long!  Back by popular demand - the Saint Joseph Youth Chorale under the direction of Karen Heyde-Lipanovich, will delight with music from, Home Alone.  We will have a surprise guest conductor and fun from the podium with our music director, Christopher Kelts. Reserve your tickets early - this concert is a big hometown hit!

03-22-2025 Mozart's "Requiem" with St Joseph Community Chorus, Benedictine Chamber Choir & MWSU Chamber Choir

The Saint Joseph Symphony in collaboration with the Saint Joseph Community Chorus under the direction of Timothy Tharaldson and guest soloists, bring to the Missouri Theater one of Mozart's most enduring, moving, and important works for chorus and orchestra, Requiem. Literally written by the composer on his deathbed, the creation of this work has been shrouded in legend and folklore. Who was the mysterious stranger in the gray cloak who commissioned it and why? Mozart came to believe he was writing it for himself, but unfortunately died before that was accomplished, thus leaving his musical colleagues to complete the work based on his sketches. To experience this dynamic and inspirational work LIVE should be on every music lover's "bucket list"!

04-19-2025 Bach to Mendelssohn

We tend to mistakenly think that during his lifetime J.S. Bach was considered a rock star.  But it wasn't until a young Felix Mendelssohn conducted the works of Johann Sebastian Bach that he attained the world-wide fame that has lasted to this day. In our season finale, Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor, features our own concertmaster, Chun-Chien Chaung and 1st violinist Andrew Holmes.  One of the works that survives in Bach's own handwriting, it will charm you with its virtuosic musical textures, playful interaction between the instruments, and graceful melodies. The concert concludes with an atmospheric ode to Mendelssohn's travels in Scotland. - his third symphony dubbed "The Scottish". Join us as we close another wonderful season of magical music on (and at) the Missouri!
